XXL x US Army: 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop
As Hip-Hop celebrated its 50th anniversary, what began as beats bouncing off the walls of a rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in The Bronx had grown into a global cultural force. Beyond music, it revolutionized fashion, art, and the very core of pop culture. Being part of such a milestone moment was both humbling and exhilarating.
I had the privilege of leading an artistic collaboration to create a 5-minute cinematic piece that honored this cultural phenomenon while highlighting an extraordinary story within the U.S. Army. Our film followed SSG Riddick and SSG Feemster, the first official rappers of the U.S. Army Field Band, chronicling their groundbreaking journey.
Through a cinematic lens, we explored their deep connection to Hip-Hop and how they’ve woven their passion for the genre into their roles within the Armed Forces. Their story is a testament to the Army’s evolving, dynamic nature, showing how individuals can bring their whole selves—including their creative identities—into service.
It was an honor to bridge the worlds of Hip-Hop and military service in a way that felt meaningful and inspiring.
